Ruff & Jam
We used to work with hardware equalizers, and our feeling is that AirEQ is in a quite similar league.
Ruff & Jam is a duo of Producers, Composers & Remixers (Jean Marie "Ruff" Moens & Luke "Jam" Mourinet). With their work on Kylie Minogue's "Love at first sight", everything went beyond all expectations, their remix became Kylie's Official Radio & Video mix for the USA, Kylie got her first nomination ever for the Grammy Award in the Best Dance Recording Category, Remix scored #1 in Billboard Dance Charts. Ruff & Jam made then a big step onto the international scene.
Other remixes & production credits includes (Robbie Williams, The Killers, Frou Frou, Street Angels, Sugababes, Bob Marley, Marianne Faithfull, Axelle Red to name but a few).
When do you use AirEQ in your mixes ?
In all our mixes AirEQ is always given a big role, mainly to add some sparkle to some tones without sounding harsh or in situations where we decide to modify the spectral amplitude of some sounds; either way, the original tone will still sound natural even though sometimes we'll apply some heavy corrections.
What are your thoughts about AirEQ usage ?
AirEQ is a real revolution in term of quality and CPU usage, indeed, what's the use of getting stronger computers if no matter what we do, we get sent back to 1998 with computers on their knees after 5 plugins ? AirEQ is not making our current systems obsolete while still delivering outstanding quality at a surprising low cpu cost. That alone is making it a winner.
But I would love to get your thoughts more about the sound or the features.
We used to work with hardware such as Avalon, Manley etc, and our feeling is that AirEQ is in a quite similar league, in a way that you can shape your sounds to fit in a mix while keeping a natural character unlike some other eqs that will make you feel like that you're just detroying the hell out of a sound to make it fit.
In some fussy tracks maybe it won't be such a problem and maybe right what you're after, but when you're looking for edge , deal with vocals, classy or minimalistic tracks AirEQ will prove easily that it just sits in a different league. And of course you can go extreme with AirEQ too but it'll still sound listenable and more like an artistic choice rather than ugly or bad eq'ing.
